Half of roughly 20 years of earnings plus support; $20 million is a rough estimate, no total was published.
Ewan McGregor, the Scottish actor known for Trainspotting, Moulin Rouge! and the Star Wars prequels, and Eve Mavrakis, a French production designer, met on the set of the British television series Kavanagh QC in 1995 and married in the same year. They had four daughters, Clara, Esther, Jamyan and Anouk, with the youngest adopted from Mongolia. McGregor became one of Britain's most successful screen actors, while Mavrakis built a career as a production designer.
McGregor's income came from film and television. After his breakthrough in Trainspotting in 1996, he starred in Star Wars as Obi-Wan Kenobi, in Big Fish, The Ghost Writer and Fargo, for which he won a Golden Globe. He returned to the role of Obi-Wan in a streaming series in 2022, which brought him a fee in the millions. The marriage lasted for more than two decades, so most of his career earnings fell within it.
The couple married in 1995 and spent more than 20 years together. They separated in 2017, as McGregor began a relationship with the actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead, whom he met while filming Fargo. Mavrakis filed for divorce in 2018, and the divorce was finalized in 2020. The terms attracted attention because of the generosity of the support award.
According to reports from the court filings, Mavrakis was to receive half of McGregor's earnings over the 20 years of marriage, together with spousal support of about $432,000 a year and child support of about $180,000 a year. No overall total was published, but a rough estimate of the lump sum, based on his reported earnings over the marriage, is about $20 million.
California law treats the money earned during a marriage as shared equally, and a marriage of over two decades with a star as successful as McGregor leaves a large pool of money to divide. The support order reflected both the length of the marriage and the family's standard of living.
McGregor continued to work at a high level, with roles in the Star Wars series, Halston and the sequel to Doctor Sleep. His income stayed high, and he married Winstead, with whom he has a son. The divorce had no effect on his career.
The McGregor case is a good example of a divorce in which the formula is published rather than the total. Like the Costner and Baumgartner case, the press focused on monthly figures, and the real total is hard to know.
McGregor has often been named as one of the most charismatic actors of his generation. He is the nephew of the actor Denis Lawson, who played Wedge Antilles in the original Star Wars films.
